Overview Child Protective Services (CPS) Worker (Multiple Positions) — Department of Human Services, Oregon. Initial Posting Date: 09/29/2025. Application deadline: open until filled. Summary of Duties As an employee within the Child Welfare Program, you will have an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Oregon’s vulnerable children and families. You will contribute to the Child Welfare Vision for Transformation to support children and young adults to be safer, healthier, experience less trauma and achieve greater well-being. Responsibilities Safety and Support: Protect children’s safety and support families by engaging with them, resource parents and caregivers, using a trauma-informed and antiracist approach. Balancing Act: Navigate the needs of the child and the family while balancing legal requirements. Assessment and Interviews: Conduct assessment and fact-finding interviews related to child safety, risk of abuse, neglect or harm, and address necessary care and needs levels of the children and families. Decision-Making: Analyze information to determine appropriate child placement, considering each family’s unique circumstances. Communication: Create reports and case notes, testify in court, and communicate with diverse populations in office, community, or legal settings. Legal/Educational Requirements: Some positions require meeting educational requirements under ORS 419B.021; degrees must be completed (not in progress) with no exceptions or grace periods for finishing a degree. Minimum Qualifications Minimum qualifications include a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record. An associate degree with either: (a) two years of human services-related experience; or (b) one year of human services related experience and related training/certification; or Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or a related field; or a bachelor’s degree unrelated to Human Services with one year of human services related experience or completion of coursework equivalent to certification. Degree must be completed; experience alone does not meet minimum qualifications; no exceptions or grace periods for finishing a degree. Essential Attributes Experience engaging trauma-impacted families from diverse backgrounds in person-centered assessments. Experience engaging with community partners to support families from diverse backgrounds. Experience contributing to psychological safety, well-being and belonging in a team environment. Experience with dynamic workflow management in a high-volume environment. Working Conditions Work occurs in offices, participants’ homes and community sites. Occasional travel for meetings, trainings, and case activities. Professional work week with hours fluctuating based on service needs; occasional overtime, including evenings and weekends. Rotating on-call schedule including evenings/weekends. Exposure to trauma-related material; organization prioritizes a trauma-informed approach. Interaction with a diverse range of individuals; may involve rapid decision-making in stressful situations. Background Checks And Requirements Finalists may undergo criminal history and background checks; adverse history may lead to disqualification. ODHS does not offer visa sponsorship. I-9 within three days of hire; E-Verify to confirm work authorization. Finalists must be cleared by FBI CJIS through fingerprint-based checks. A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record are required.
