Director of Special Events Middlebury College

Position Summary: Design and execute a comprehensive special events strategy to support Middlebury's fundraising priorities, donor cultivation and stewardship, in anticipation of a major fundraising campaign. Articulate event objectives and outcomes; evaluate efficacy of events. Develop, plan, and manage individual events to advance relationships with Middlebury prospects, donors, and volunteers, engaging faculty, students, and campus staff as appropriate. Supervise the special events manager.
Essential Functions: Offer is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check. General Responsibilities: • Develop a series of content rich events that educate and engage Middlebury’s external constituencies.
• Design event program/content, schedule and coach event speakers, develop communication and marketing materials, and event-follow up to achieve desired outcomes.
• Coordinate event logistics, including catering, venue, transportation, signage, decorations, audio/visual, invitation lists, invitations, programs, and presentation materials, as well as drafting event briefing documents for the President and other staff.
• In collaboration with colleagues, determine invitation criteria for special events. Organize and review invitation lists for consistency and accuracy.
• In collaboration with senior colleagues and the vice president, provide support for meetings of high-level volunteer groups, including campaign committees.
• Coordinate with trustee, alumni and parent hosts regarding event details.
• Develop and institute a plan to thank and recognize hosts, speakers, volunteers.
• Write event briefings and disseminate to staff, events hosts, speakers, and others as needed.
• Update Master Events Calendar and other calendars with most current event information.
• Work cooperatively with others and accept direction from supervisors.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifcation Education:
Bachelor’s degree required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of desktop applications and relational databases.
Must be incredibly well organized and able to manage multiple events concurrently.
Must be detailed oriented, able to work well and maintain composure under pressure, and solve problems.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Evening and weekend work required; some travel.
Experience: Seven to ten years related experience required. Experience in a fundraising environment preferred.
Effective interpersonal skills, listening, diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships with donors, volunteers, and all levels of staff.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
