Job Description
We are seeking a hands-on, knowledgeable Dockmaster capable of leading and overseeing all aspects of the marina. Specifically, he/she manages wet slips and dry rack movements of vessels, maintenance and repairs to facilities, structures and common areas. This position is the primary decision-maker with responsibility for forklift operations, security, and supervision/training other forklift operators. This position will work closely with the Office Administrator to document insurance, certificate transfers, rentals and key administrative tasks necessary to providing a positive experience for our members and guests. The Dockmaster reports to a designated officer on the Board of Directors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
This position is at a private, non-profit marina with 86 dry racks and 110 wet slips, plus a clubhouse. The Dockmaster is the primary decision-maker and problem-solver. They provide active supervision of all staff on a daily basis. The right candidate must have the ability to remove and replace boats safely in the dry rack using the forklift in a timely manner. The Dockmaster will also train and supervise other forklift operators. They must be capable of handling a variety of situations relating to the proper docking and repositioning of vessels. They will be responsible for the day-to-day marina grounds and dock maintenance, clubhouse operation, and scheduling maintenance of the forklift. They are proficient in handling minor repairs to docks, dry racks, clubhouse, piping, and the marina workboat. They need to oversee various specialty contractors for more significant repairs and work with forklift operators on minor repairs.
This role will serve as the ambassador for the marina and is the first person with whom a member and their guests will interact. This employee must have the ability to work with slip owners, slip renters, and all types of customers and vendors in a professional manner. They must be able to work with minimal board supervision, keeping the building and the equipment in good working order. They need to recognize problems and resolve issues independently and notify the Board of Directors of such efforts. They must promptly report to the Board of Directors on budgeting issues, policy violations, accidents, injuries, spills, and near-misses so that remedial action can be swiftly undertaken. They must have the ability to prioritize and multitask. The dock master also monitors weather and named storms during hurricane season to determine when to call for boat evacuations. They must be willing to work whatever hours are necessary to prepare the marina for any named storms/hurricanes and oversee the evacuation of boats when required, both wet and dry slips.
Other Job Functions
· Trouble shoots minor mechanical, electrical, carpentry, and plumbing issues related to the marina.
· Help forecast annual budgets for equipment maintenance, marina & dock maintenance, and building repair & maintenance.
· Manage maintenance costs within budgets for equipment, marina & docks, and building repairs.
· Daily monitoring docks for debris and vessels for mooring and/or sinking problems.
· Responsible for simple maintenance and operation of forklift.
· Familiarity with systems such as HVAC, plumbing (e.g. toilets, faucets, and dock water), and electrical equipment.
· Basic carpentry skills (e.g., gazebo, storage shed, decks, and docks).
· Maintain a safe and clean environment throughout the harbor and marina facilities.
· Customer service experience greeting marina owners and guests.
· Answer phone and return calls promptly and monitor and use VHF radio according to Coast Guard regulations.
· Record ice sales and quarterly electric meter readings and other amenities charges.
· Landscape and grounds maintenance of common areas at the marina.
· Remind members of the Rules & Regulations if infractions are observed and potential safety issues are present.
· Clean Clubhouse after parties and bathrooms as needed when janitorial services are not scheduled.
· May need to monitor the parking lot and resolve parking conflicts with courtesy and firmness during popular boating days and holidays.
· Obtain and sort marina mail.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
· 5 years of prior marina supervisory experience.
· High School diploma and relevant technical college courses.
· Current Forklift Operator license and 1 year of experience operating large forklift.
· Eye/hand coordination, depth perception, and general health necessary to safely conduct forklift operations involving high-dollar-value property in close quarters.
· Ability to lift 40 pounds.
· Prior experience with marine contractors managing dredging, and associated USACE, CAMA, and local regulatory agencies.
· Positive and pleasant demeanor.
· Proficient in operating small power boats and boat handling.
· Red Cross First Aid and CPR (marina will pay for attending classes and maintaining certification).
· Pass drug test and have no DWI violations in the past 5 years.
· Satisfy a criminal record background check.
