Job Summary: Under direct supervision and order from a physician, optometrist and/or Department Administrator or designee, performs a variety of standard diagnostic tests of the eye, following established procedures and policies as an aid in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases and visual disorders.

Checks visual acuity before administering any test or performing any photography. Aids physician in explanation of testing procedures, side effects, and follow-up care. Performs visual field testing in one or more of its three standard forms: Automated central and peripheral fields; Tangent screens; Goldman perimetry. Ascertains lenses prescription as needed prior to testing. Document the findings. Performs keratometry measurements, interferometry, lensometry, and tonometry as needed. Performs accurate ultrasound A-scan measurements and IOL calculations for cataract surgery and lens implantation; performs B-scan diagnostic exam in search of ocular abnormalities or foreign bodies. May have to perform in operating room setting. Must have knowledge of photographical techniques to perform the following: Fluorescein angiography in proper sequence and in stereo and color fundus photos in stereo. Iris angiography in proper sequence. Photograph the anterior chamber of the eye by means of a slit lamp, including the conjunctiva, cornea, iris, and lens. Photograph the external anatomy of the eye or facial portions by means of microphotography with a 35-mm camera or Polaroid camera. Photograph conjunctiva and corneal abnormalities by means of a cornea scope camera and/or corneal topography. Photograph during ocular surgery if needed. Must have experience with digital photography and transferring data to CDs. Must have knowledge of basic functions of a 35-mm camera and its variable settings and capabilities of a Polaroid camera. Must have knowledge of most common film types to include black and white, color negative print, color slide, Polaroids black/white, color and sensitivity rating for each. Must have knowledge of darkroom techniques to include processing and printing of film by manual method if digital camera not functioning and to perform processing if needed. Evaluate the patients condition by observing signs, symptoms, and reactions to testing procedures, and reports to RN and physician any unusual reactions. Have basic computer skills. Maintains appropriate filing system of all diagnostic photography and testing reports. Maintains clean and organized work area, and replaces expendable supplies as needed. Performs any other duties necessary to help in the smooth operation of the department as a whole. Establishes and maintains courteous, cooperative relations with the public, patients, and other personnel. Performs other duties as required. Promotes, ensures, and improves customer service to internal/external customers by demonstrating skills which are consistent with the organizations philosophy of providing extraordinary customer relations and quality service. Basic Qualifications: Experience Minimum two (2) years of experience in an outpatient clinical setting. Education N/A License, Certification, Registration Ophthalmic Technician Certificate from The Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology OR Ophthalmic Assistant Certificate from The Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology Additional Requirements: N/A Preferred Qualifications: JCAPHO certification preferred.
