This position may be filled as either Medical Support Assistant or Certified Medical Assistant I or II - depending on experience, expertise, and qualifications. The Medical Support Assistant works alongside Physicians and Advanced Practice Providers to provide direct patient care according to state and federal guidelines. This position plays an important role in the ambulatory setting by not only performing clinical and administrative duties but also helping patients feel at ease and understanding provider instructions. Essential Responsibilities include providing direct patient care by taking vitals, patient history, referrals, and patient phone messages under direct supervision of the provider and/or clinical supervisor; adhering to National Patient Safety Goals; contributing to the assessment/re-assessment of patients; monitoring and documenting patient status; managing large call volume while maintaining excellent telephone etiquette; organizing workflow to meet patient needs in a timely manner; retrieving and transporting instruments and supplies; following standard precautions due to moderate exposure to hazardous risks; stocking exam rooms, taking inventory, and ordering supplies; making scheduling arrangements with other healthcare professionals and facilities; assisting with procedures including maintaining sterile field and specimen labeling; gathering and documenting information about patient condition including lab values, pain levels, patient education needs, nutritional status and potential complications; performing cleaning, sterilization and/or high-level disinfection of scopes, probe, instruments and equipment according to manufacturer instructions; and performing other duties as assigned. Minimum requirements vary by level but generally include a High School Diploma or GED, Basic Life Support certification, and for Certified Medical Assistant levels, completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program and specific certifications such as AMT, AAMA, NCCT, or others. Experience requirements range from 0-3 years for Medical Support Assistant and Certified Medical Assistant I, to 3-5 years for Certified Medical Assistant II.
